Amazon’s Gifted Kindle Reader Continues To Sell Extremely Well

Since the end of 2009, The Kindle reader has been the number one selling item on the Amazon website. The launch of Apple’s iPad led to widespread predictions of the Kindle’s demise – but, if anything, it seems to be selling faster than ever before.
The launch of the updated Kindle 3 in August of 2010 simply underlined Amazon’s domination of the ebook reader market. The latest version of the Kindle incorporated a number of different technical improvements, including a better, higher contrast display, a smaller and lighter casing and improved memory capacity – enough for around 3,500 books.
Amazon also released their new, WiFi only, entry level Kindle – perfect for those who don’t anticipate the need to connect away from a WiFi zone – priced at only $ 139. The 3G plus WiFi model also had its price dropped to just $ 189. Both of these options are much cheaper than even the entry level iPad, a major factor in ensuring that the Kindle 3 became the quickest selling Kindle model to date.
The fact that there are no monthly download or connection fees associated with the Kindle is another appealing aspect of the Amazon price model. Amazon is notoriously tight lipped when it comes to sales figures – however, a company spokesman has confirmed that, since the launch of the Kindle 3 in August, “millions” have been sold.
The new reduced prices make e-book readers very attractive to potential buyers. Considering that e-book prices are generally lower than traditional printed books, and also that there are many out of copyright books available as free downloads, it’s very possible that users could recover the cost of their reader in a relatively short time.
2010 could well be the year that the e-book reader really goes mainstream. Lower price levels, improved functionality and an ever growing selection of available books to choose from will make e-book readers in general, and the Kindle in particular, a popular gift choice over the 2010 festive season.
