can you use a gas gift card at the pump?

or do you have to go inside and give it to the person at the counter to scan, its a hess gift card

You can use the card at the pump because of the magnetic strip on the back of it it is good at the pump without going inside to pay for the gas.I know i worked at gas stations for a long time.
