Just as motorcycle helmets protect the head from high speed collisions or falling objects, DOT motorcycle helmets are certified to have a one inch protective coating like foam. These helmets have a retaining system or chin strap, crushable liner, rigid outer shell and comfort or fit padding.

The role of the outer shell is for additional “load spreading” capabilities and for preventing objects from penetrating your helmet. The liners are made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) or other similar materials to absorb impact energy by crushing. Its chin straps help retain the helmet position in a crash – just make sure it’s buckled properly and is adjusted together with the helmet’s fit padding.

There are various DOT motorcycle helmets on the market. Aside from its guaranteed high quality, these helmets are featured in various styles.

DOT certified carbon fiber helmets offer excellent rider comfort as well as field of view. They also have a Plush Moisture type absorbent interior, a flow-through ventilation system and large eyeport. For full face motorcycle helmets it features balloon lightweight shells; interior flip-up sun visors; flow through ventilation; flush mounted and multi-ratcheting face shields.

Other DOT motorcycle helmets are regarded as the ultimate expression of the purest form. These types have exclusive graphics and are featured in different designs as that of a street helmet, off-road dirt helmet and half helmet street design. Aside from an advanced composite shell, other features of this helmet include rear vents that improve venting and aerodynamics; washable and removable liners for care and ease of cleaning; exhaust and intake vents that aid maximum cooling as well as ventilation. Having a DOT sticker at the back of the helmet would mean it passed the Dept. of Transportations standards in the US. DOT regulations pertain to the strict laws on motor cycle helmets. To achieve this certification, motorcycle helmet manufacturers submit their helmet models for testing. The Shell Memorial Foundation, on the other hand, issues additional certification for those who can pass other testing standards. This is only voluntary as compared to the mandatory DOT certification.
