How do we ask for cash only as a gift?
My husband is getting his PhD and I am getting my masters degree. After commencement in May we are moving to France. We plan to sell everything, and take with us only essentials– clothes, cookware, etc. His mom wants to throw us a graduation/bon voyage party and people will certainly bring gifts. How do we politely say “we don’t have room to take a vase/frame, but if you want to give us something, cash would be best.” Our time will be very tight as we will be leave 2 days after the party. Do we write something on the invitation, or convey it word of mouth? Or let it be what it will be, and donate the gifts the next day?
There is absolutely no way that you can ask for cash without being EXTREMELY tacky and offending the invitees. Gifts in any from should not be mentioned on any invitation, period. Accept any gifts that are given graciously, if you need to be rid of them later by donating them, so be it.
